As a very active DJ Service in Harrisburg and serving clients in Lancaster and York as well, we know quite a bit about weddings. For most wedding couples this is often the first wedding that they have ever planned, and while they may have attended a few; they were there as guests and not observers.
That is as it should be. You are there to enjoy the moment, not to take notes in order to plan your future wedding. That said, there is much that a DJ Service does, or at least should do over the course of an event that often goes unnoticed.
While as a DJ Service provider I am biased, I think it is no stretch to say that the DJ Service will have a greater impact on your wedding day and the memories of it than any other item, service, or vendor that you buy or hire. I realize that is a pretty bold statement so I will provide examples of why I have come to that conclusion.
Before I get into the specifics let me clarify my statement. My statement was no greater impact on your wedding day and the memories of.
No great wedding or corporate event succeeds or fails as a result of a single service provider. It takes a village or in this case, a team of talented professionals working together to create a great event. We are each a spoke in the wheel. The DJ Service is not necessarily the most difficult, the most skilled, or the most labor intensive of the services provided. It could be the Photographer, Videographer, or Caterer that deserves one or more of those distinctions.
What does the DJ impact?
Pre - Ceremony
These days the most popular location for the wedding ceremony is the wedding venue. As your guests arrive for the joy and anticipation of the magnificent day they are impacted by the DJ. Music fills the air and sets the mood for the ceremony to come. As guests mingle and find their seats they bask in the sounds of Vitamin String Quartet, Classical Music by Bach, or any other genre you have chosen for your wedding prelude.
As the bridal party processional begins, the DJ plays the selections you have chosen to represent your love story. As the music fades the vow exchange begins with the words of the officiant being amplified by the quality wireless microphones the DJ has provided.
As the words “I now present for the very first time as husband and wife” ring out, the DJ hits play at exactly the right part of the song as you and the love of your life bask in the thunderous applause of the guests who are here to witness you entering a new chapter of your life.
As your guest move on to another area of the venue to mingle and enjoy light refreshments, they are greeted by the sounds of an upbeat playlist of toe – tappers. This playlist is crafted to set a light-hearted mood and a bit of anticipation of the festivities to come. As the session winds down the DJ | MC directs and welcomes your guests into the reception area.
This is the longest portion of the celebration and the dance floor is certainly what most DJs are related to for good reason. There are however many other ways the DJ | MC impacts during this 3 – 4 hour segment.
The Grand Entrance of the bridal party and the bride and groom. The DJ | MC presents those making toasts and the announcement of dinner service. The presentation of the newlyweds for their first dance and the parent dances that follow. The announcements of the cake cutting, bouquet toss, garter removal, sparkler exit or any other activities that have been planned for the day.
Not only is the DJ announcing these events and coordinating the musical accompaniment, he/she is also serving as the director. Working with the photographer and videographer to ensure that not only are the in position but that all of the V.I.P.’s are present. All of these are once in a lifetime moments and we don’t get any second takes.
As you can see, from the moment your wedding day starts, your DJ Service is involved in every aspect. As I stated before, this blog is not to diminish the talent and labor of any other vendor. The photographer is typically on site before the DJ arrives and, depending on the coverage chosen by the bride and groom, leave before the party is over. In terms of total hours invested the photographer will typically have a greater number than the DJ Service in my opinion.
It is important to remember that often during your wedding, the photographer and videographer are documenting results. Those results are often in reaction to the DJ Service and what they do or play.
As you plan your wedding or special event you’ll find that there are so many elements to make decisions on: venue, attire, décor, menu, floral, photographer, etc. etc. I would suggest that each
of you make a list of what are the three most important things to you for your day. Is it the photographs that you will have forever? Is it the venue that will wow your guests?
Take the items that you both agree upon, and there will be one or two, and start your search and secure those vendors or items. Keep in mind that you often get what you pay for. When selecting a venue it is easy to see the difference between a Mansion venue and the local VFW Hall. When selecting a photographer you can see their artistry in their portfolio. When selecting the caterer you can attend a tasting.
When it comes to entertainment there is no tangible item to see, touch, or taste. My suggestion is to educate yourself on what a DJ Service should do for their clients. Look for social proof that they are not only experienced but that the experience is recent.
Technology is changing at warp speed. Just think bout how many cellphones you have owned in the last 10 years. The same thing has happened in the DJ industry. You want a company that is not using the sound system equivalent of a flip-phone and doesn’t have a client review in the last five years.
Does it necessarily mean that the DJ Service is bad? Of course not! But, if I am taking my wife out to dinner to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary you can bet that is not the night that I am going to try a new restaurant that doesn’t have solid ratings and reviews.
