No one wants their wedding day to be described as bland. Just like in interior design, color is critical to setting the scene for your wedding. Your wedding colors can majorly influence the look and feel of your big day and choosing them is not always the easiest decision.
Your color scheme will largely depend on the Washington DC Wedding venue you choose, the season, and the setting of your wedding.
It is important to think long and hard about the colors you’re going to incorporate in your big day because the church will be decorated to match, along with your bridesmaids, groomsmen, cake, and much more. Additionally, these colors will be in your wedding photo’s for a lifetime of viewing. This is certainly not a decision you should rush to make.
6 Tips for Choosing Your DC Wedding Colors
Choose a base color.
Your base color will be the one that is used most prominently throughout your wedding. You can't build your full-color palette without it. The base color can be anything from soft blush pink or peach to elegant navy blue, punchy yellow, or even dramatic jade green, depending on the overall vibe you want to create.
You want a color that:
Looks great on everyone.
Is easy to find.
Can be used to accent your cake, reception hall, and bouquets.
Most importantly, it should be a color you genuinely love!
Once you have your base color, the next step is to choose a handful of complementary “accent” colors — generally two or three of them. These accents will round out your wedding palette, adding dimension and variation.
Always have at least one neutral and subtle color like beige, ivory, pearl, or white.
You want a light color that can complement everything, even as a backdrop to your invites, and as colors for flowers to accent the bouquet.
Do not choose more than 4 colors for your wedding color scheme. It can get complicated to make them work well together.
Choose colors that you can find for: the cake, dresses, ribbons, flowers, invitations, accent pieces, and more.
You need to pick colors that you can buy!
Even though something may be beautiful you may not be able to find all the items you need in that color.
Be prepared that not everything is going to match.
Sometimes you will buy something “purple” and another “purple” item and they will be completely (or slightly) different. No reason to get upset, not everything will match perfectly. Do your best to coordinate but don’t drive yourself crazy. There are bigger fish to fry.
You do not have to pick a color scheme.
Instead, go with a theme, then you do not have to worry about colors coordinating if everything goes with the theme of the day.
Think about your wedding season.
While there is nothing written in stone that mandates your wedding colors match up with your wedding season, some colors lend themselves naturally to certain times of the year. If you are feeling stuck when choosing a color palette, look to your wedding season for a bit of inspiration.
