History

Mount Hope Estate & Winery has a rich history that spans several generations of the Grubb family. The Estate was originally the summer home of the Grubb family, who were early American iron masters. The properties that would become the Estate were purchased in 1779 by Peter Grubb, who established an iron furnace at Mount Hope in 1784.

Founding

Peter Grubb was born in 1740 and founded the family's Iron Dynasty. He came to America from Stoke Climsland, Cornwall, England, and settled in Delaware. He established an iron furnace at Mount Hope in 1784, later becoming the center of operations for the Grubb family's iron business.

Peter's son, Henry Bates Grubb (1774-1823), built the Mount Hope Mansion in 1800. The mansion is now home to the Mount Hope Estate and Winery. Henry Bates Grubb also built the Hope Church in Mount Hope, with the first service being the baptism of his son, Clement, on January 3, 1818.

The Mount Hope Grubb family operated the iron business until the 19th century. They were one of America's most prominent iron-making families during this time. The family's iron business was so successful that they could purchase large tracts of land in Pennsylvania.

In 1867, Daisy Elizabeth Brooke Grubb inherited the Mount Hope Estate from her father, Edward Grubb. She was the last of the Grubb family to live at Mount Hope. After her death, the Estate changed hands several times until it was eventually purchased by the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in 1980.
