This article is one in a series of articles intended to help not only the wedding couples we serve from Washington DC to Lancaster PA; but to help anyone who is planning their dream wedding. Please comment and share with anyone you feel may benefit from this information.

We suggest that you keep everything as is when it comes to the honeymoon and travel docs. Name changes don’t happen overnight. You are dealing with a government agency after all. To ensure that your honeymoon goes off without a hitch or hassle book all of your travel using your maiden name.

Keep in mind that when traveling abroad, your passport is your primary form of identification and not your driver’s license. Additionally, hotels here or abroad require that the name on the ID presented match that on the reservation booking.

If you are planning to travel on your honeymoon weeks or months after your wedding you can certainly use that time to complete the name change process.

The Social Security office should be the first step in the name change process. For answers to the FAQ about the name change process click here

After getting your Social Security Card changed your next steps are changing the name on your Driver’s License and your Passport. Click here for information on updating your Passport

Now that the big three have been addressed you can turn your attention to your Bank and Credit Card accounts.

A quick tip! Be as prepared as possible and ensure you have proper forms of identification, your birth certificate, certified original copies of your marriage license, a check or money order to cover fees, and any necessary forms.

The important thing is that you don’t put any pressure on yourself. At the end of the day, it isn’t important what name your ID has listed as you undertake this journey together. What matters is that you thoroughly enjoy this once in a lifetime moment! It won’t happen twice.

There will be plenty of time and “opportunity” to wait in line at the DMV and Social Security office.
