4 Tips To Create The Perfect First Dance For Your Wedding

The first dance is one of the most memorable moments of the wedding reception. All of your guests’ eyes are on you as you and your partner share this intimate moment on the dance floor. Dancing under a spotlight in front of a group of people can be a bit intimidating.  How do you gain the confidence, experience, and knowledge you need to thoroughly enjoy this romantic moment?

Here are some tips on how to create the perfect first dance:

Choose Your First Dance Song Wisely

When selecting a song for your first dance keep in mind the tempo and length of the song. Try to select a danceable song with a consistent beat that is no longer than 3 minutes. If the song you love is closer to 4 - 5 minutes long, consider asking the DJ to shorten it a bit.

Work With a Dance Instructor

A professional dance instructor with ballroom experience is ideal. If you need recommendations, Perfect Harmony Entertainment would love to suggest the dance instructors that we have worked with.

Let your instructor know where you will enter the dance floor and its shape and size. Communicate what your wedding dress is like and any “special’ moves like dips, turns, and spins you had in mind to make your dance memorable and elegant. This will help your instructor create the perfect dance that will be both elegant and beautifully photographed.

Allow Yourself About 90 Days to Practice

This will give you enough time to plan, practice, and perfect your dance without any stress of a close deadline. Plan to practice your dance at least twice a week to feel comfortable, and be able to look relaxed on your wedding day.

You will want to make sure that the DJ, Photographer, and Videographer are all on the same page. Let them know when you plan to start and end your first dance. This should be noted clearly on the Wedding Planner.

You also want to be certain that the DJ is using the same version of the song you used to practice. This is even more critical if you have selected a longer song that you plan to shorten by starting at a cue point or fading out.
