This article is designed to provide engaged couples with the tips we have learned while working with others leading up to their wedding day.

By publishing this article, I hope to reduce the stress you might feel as your wedding date approaches and on the day of the wedding. Every wedding and couple that we work with is different so there is no one size fits all approach. It is likely that not every tip will apply to every wedding or couple. Hopefully, you will find a tip or two that will help you on your wedding planning journey.

1.       Consider a Wedding Planner or a Day of Coordinator.

This person should also have the timeline and make sure that everyone is adhering to the wedding day timeline. If you don’t have the budget a family member or friend to deal with your vendors and the venue will be a great buffer for you.

2.       Get Input On the Timeline.

Your wedding team will likely be comprised of a handful of vendors. To get the best results for you and the best experience for your guests, it is important that your vendors are on the same page and that you are aware of the impact of the timeline.

The relationship between the photographer and your DJ is probably the most crucial. For most couples, the photography of their wedding is extremely important. A lot of the events that will be photographed will have a musical accompaniment. Each of these moments is brief and not repeated so you want these two vendors working closely.

Keep in mind that nearly everything on the timeline directly or indirectly impacts you. Every time you have pulled away to a different area of the venue you become disconnected from the guests. These folks have come from near and far to spend this day with you. They want to have fun but they are not there for the DJ. They hope to be fed a good meal but they are not there for the food. They are there to celebrate with you. I have seen many dance parties fall apart because the timeline called for the bride and groom to spend an hour or more taking sunset photos in the middle of the reception.

This is your day and you should get exactly what you want. If you want a legendary party with guests having the time of their lives, make sure that your photographer’s timeline does not have you missing large segments of the dance party.

3.       Invest in quality Photography.

This is not the area to be frugal. Wedding Photography rates tend to match quality. Remember when your wedding day is over, the music stops, and the food is all gone, all you will have of your special day is your photography and your memories. Your photos will bring back the wonderful day you had and tell the story of one of the best days of your life.

The cheapest rate is not the best value and the most expensive is not the best quality. You can find great value if you look. You can also reach out to other vendors like us.

How can you find a great photographer?

  • Check out our wedding recaps on our blog posts. We always give credit to the photography team.

  • Ask us who we recommend. We work with a ton of vendors. Whether you book us or not we want you to have a fantastic event. We are happy to suggest highly talented professionals.

  • “Try their mashed potatoes.” A weird saying but stick with me. Don’t get sucked in by the images on their website. These images will represent the best work they have ever produced. I am not a photographer but if I shot 400 pictures of your wedding, I could get one or two shots that are pretty darn good.

  • Ask to see their entire gallery of the last three weddings they shot. You want an amazing album of photos from your wedding and not to pay $500 each for the handful of good ones. This will allow you to see who the real artists are!

4.       Make sure you have an incredible DJ.

This sounds totally self-serving and it is. But it is also very true. There is lots of documentation online and elsewhere that support this statement.

In post-wedding surveys, Entertainment has commonly mentioned as an item brides and grooms wished that they had invested more of their wedding budget.

In these same surveys, couples were asked what aspect had the biggest impact on their guest’s enjoyment of their wedding. The entertainment is always a top factor.

No single vendor will have a greater impact on your guest’s enjoyment for the duration that your entertainment will. Your photographer will be on sight for as many hours as the DJ and sometimes longer however, the content and results they produce will be seen only by a handful of your guests and not until much later.

Your DJ will interact with your guests both musically and verbally for much of the event. Verbally they will represent you as the MC of the event and musically they will provide the romantic soundtrack for the ceremony and the dance floor party after dinner. Fist pumping, floor-filling, sing at the top of your lung’s parties don’t happen by accident or someone pushing random buttons.

5.       Enjoy the day!

Don’t get stressed by the clock. The timeline is a guide. With 75 – 150 people, there is bound to be a delay or two. The timeline is to keep order. Don’t stress if the cake is cut five minutes later than on the timeline.

This day will go by so fast so make the very best of the time you have! Don’t sweat the small stuff. That wants your planner is there for.
